What it does
Enough to settle an argument about what was borrowed, when, and how much is left.
One page per person
Keep every loan you have made to someone in one place, with their contact details and whatever notes you need to remember.
Repayments and balances
Log each repayment as it arrives. The outstanding balance is recalculated from the payments, interest and charges on the loan.
Monthly payment plans
Split a loan over a number of months and get a schedule. Pay ahead and the remaining installments are recalculated.
Interest and extra charges
Set a rate and interest accrues on its own. Add one-off charges — a late fee, a cost you covered — with a reason attached.
Reminders before the due date
Borrowers with an account get an email three days before a payment is due, so the reminder does not have to come from you.
A view for the borrower
The other side can sign in to see what they owe, request a loan, and propose a payment for you to confirm.
How it works
- 1
Add the person
A name is enough to start. Add an email if you want them to get reminders or their own view.
- 2
Record the loan
Amount and currency, when you lent it, and either a single due date or a monthly plan. Add a rate if you charge one.
- 3
Log repayments
Enter payments as they come in. The balance, the schedule and what is due this month all follow from there.
Questions people ask
Is LoanCompass a lender or a payment app?
No. LoanCompass is a record-keeping ledger for loans between private individuals — no money moves through it. It is not a lender, a broker, a payment processor, or an escrow service, and nothing you record in it creates or enforces a legal agreement.
How much does LoanCompass cost?
LoanCompass is free while it is in early access. Creating an account asks for an email address and a password only — no card and no billing details.
Is the interest rate monthly or annual?
Every interest rate in LoanCompass is a monthly rate, for all payment methods. Entering 2 means 2% per month, not 2% per year.
What repayment plans can a loan use?
A loan is either a single due date or one of six monthly plans: monthly amortization (equal fixed payments), diminishing balance, fixed principal plus interest, interest-only with the principal due as a balloon, add-on or flat rate, and bullet (principal and interest together at maturity). The full schedule is shown before the loan is created.
What happens when a payment is late?
A loan with an interest rate accrues one month of interest on its outstanding balance for each full month past the due date, checked once a day, and never twice for the same month. Lend 10,000 at 5% monthly due 1 June and leave it unpaid: 500 accrues on 1 July for a balance of 10,500, then 525 on 1 August for 11,025.
What happens if someone pays more than the scheduled amount?
An overpayment covers the current installment's interest first, then its principal, and anything left over reduces principal ahead of schedule. Pay 8,000 against a 7,669.20 installment and the extra 330.80 comes off the principal, which shortens the loan or shrinks later installments depending on the payment method.
Can the borrower see the loan as well?
Yes, if you record an email address they hold an account on. A borrower signs in to see the balance, charges and schedule on their own loans, propose a payment for you to confirm, and request a new one — they cannot edit your records or see anyone else on your ledger.
Does LoanCompass send payment reminders?
Borrowers who have an account are emailed three days before a payment is due, by a scheduled job rather than by you. Lenders see what is due this month, what is overdue, and a forecast of repayments due over the next 3, 6 or 12 months.
Can I track loans in more than one currency?
Yes. Each loan carries its own currency and every total is reported per currency. LoanCompass never converts between currencies — there is no exchange rate in the product — so two currencies stay two separate figures rather than one blended total.
